Su trabajo juntos ha inspirado incluso a grupos de heavy metal. Decide emprender carrera en solitario a finales de los 60 y en su mejor momento logra colocar en el número 1 de álbumes en Inglaterra 6 de sus discos de forma consecutiva. Allí además tiene 31 singles en el Top-10 (16 en los Estados Unidos). Sin duda una carrera exitosa que en los últimos años ha mantenido gracias a grabar discos de versiones, uno tras otro.
